This is a first edition catalogue design for the artist Sagarika Sundaram’s solo exhibition in New York at the Palo Gallery in 2023.
Writers and curators Andrew Gardner and Vyjayanthi Rao co-edited the volume and contributed texts that explored different aspects of the artist’s practice working with felted fiber.
The book opens with a series of black-and-white photographs by Anita Goes, shot on film, documenting Sagarika at work in her New York studio.
The lettering on the cover was traced from images of her artwork, mirroring the movement of fiber patterns in her work.
Intricate design details appear throughout the book, including a tippin—a small book within a book, printed on lightweight pink Bengal paper, a nod to Sagarika’s birthplace, Kolkata in West Bengal.
The vibrancy of her hand-dyed textiles is captured through a special UV LED litho printing process on uncoated paper. The book is bound with thread sewn through an odd number of pierced holes along the fold of each signature, with both ends of the thread tied together in a single knot.
