A catalogue design for the 2019 Frieze Art Fair, London presentation, showcasing the work of pioneering Indian textile artist Monika Correa (b. 1938) by Jhaveri Contemporary. A key figure in a select group of Indian artists who have transformed weaving into a fine art practice, Correa’s work stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation.
The catalogue includes a monographic essay by curator and writer Grant Watson, and highlights a selection of Correa’s striking black-and-white tapestries, crafted primarily from unbleached cotton and wool.
The cover design and bright linen material were inspired by the monochrome saris that Monika Correa often wears. Custom lettering is blind debossed onto the cover, lending it a subtle, tactile quality. The catalogue is finished with a singer-sewn binding, adding a handcrafted detail that echoes Correa’s own textile practice.
