New work for the recently opened exhibition “Mrinalini Mukherjee and her circle” at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts, London. This exhibition explores a century of South Asian art through the life and work of pioneering sculptor Mrinalini Mukherjee (1949–2015). For the first time, her diverse practice is presented in dialogue with a constellation of mentors, friends, and family who shaped her artistic journey. Featuring works by Leela Mukherjee, Benode Behari Mukherjee, K.G. Subramanyan, Jagdish Swaminathan, Nilima Sheikh, and Gulammohammed Sheikh.
All Around’s design approach creates a visual intersection of these connections through bold, graphic forms carried across the 2D exhibition design. The use of a high-contrast, expressive serif typeface, lends a confident yet poetic voice to all interpretation texts. Exhibition labels were printed on handmade hemp paper with bronze screen-printed lettering, echoing Mukherjee’s use of hemp, bronze, and other earthy indigenous materials and textures in her works. As a finishing touch, charcoal clay numbers were crafted for object wayfinding, complementing the 3D exhibition design Msoma Architects and creating a natural balance between contemporary spatial design and South Asian tactile material culture
